Scott Pilgrim Movie Review

What's goin on? So I saw Scott Pligrim vs. The World on Friday at the 12:20pm show out at Empire Theatres. And it. was. AWESOME! Yes it did live up to my expectations!!
Let me just say that I had very high expectations for the film just because the source material was so awesome and Edgar Wright was the director.

Although there were quite a few changes made from the graphic novels, nothing was too significant to cause any sort of anger. There were a few plotlines that were fully removed from the movie that I would have liked to see, but thinking back on it, they weren't significant enough to warrant inclusion. An example of this would be the storyline with Lisa. I liked being able to see Scott in high school and some of his past relationships but there just wasn't enough time for that. It also would have been cool to see more aboot Scott and Envy's relationship, but, her role was drastically reduced for the film.

All the effects that were used were awesome. The film was stylized so that it retained the feel of the graphic novels (which had the feel of a video game). I was also very impressed with the fight scenes. Wright wanted his actors to perform their own stunts, so they had extensive training for the film. And I can't believe I'm going to say this, I actually bought the fact that Michael Cera could be as badass a fighter as Scott Pilgrim. Yes, George Michael Bluth can fight!

The obvious highlight character of the film was Kieran Culkin as Wallace. This was the one character I was very excited to see translated onscreen and Culkin did not disappoint. He was hilarious! Unfortunately, there was not enough of him!

I know a lot of people were worried that Michael Cera wouldn't be able to pull off the role, but I thought he actually did a pretty good job and I wasn't disappointed. I am also aware that a lot of people were unsure of Mary Elizabeth Winstead playing Ramona just because people didn't think she was "drop dead gorgeous enough." First off, Winstead is gorgeous, especially when she's able to wear 'normal' hairstyles. Second off, Ramona isn't supposed to be "drop dead gorgeous'. Scott is attracted to her because she is spunky and mysterious! Pretty much, kudos to all the actors, they all did a fine job and I was pleased.

One of the complaints I have for the movie was that it was too short. The fights with all the exes happened over the course of a couple weeks in the movie, but in the books it was over a year. That kind of resulted in a lack of background on each ex. This is minor but it was pretty cool in the books to gain information on the exes and see how Ramona treated each of them. The too short runtime also resulted in Scott and Ramona's individual development to not be as extensive. The books show how much Scott grows up between Book 1 and Book 6, but there wasn't enough time for that. Ramona also changes quite a bit in the books, but in the movie she only had the opportunity to change her appearance twice.

There were two things that were completely omitted from the movie that I really had hoped would be included. The first was my favourite line from the books:
Scott: Why are your pants off? Quit taking your pants off all the time!
Wallace: It's hot! Also? I'm hot, so enjoy it while you can.
This unfortunately had to be cut from the movie because the whole movie took place during a Canadian winter and there was no time for the heatwave to happen (which prompts this line).  Luckily they still included the very long winded "insult" that Todd dishes that includes a cleaning lady and dust.

The other thing that was excluded was the whole Honest Ed's part which would have been very fun to see because Honest Ed's 'honestly' does that to you. In fact, the whole Envy/Todd thing was condensed a lot more than I would have liked, but again, time restriction.

I ended up getting the soundtrack for the film yesterday because I really enjoyed Sex Bob-Omb's songs and I think part of that has to do with the fact that Beck composed their songs and I like Beck. His influence is definitely noticeable and I love it.  My favourite song is probably Garbage Truck and it is seriously catchy. Threshold is also quite good, but a little short. Oh well! A very fun soundtrack.

I'm proably going to see the movie at least once more in theater and I may try to find a torrent afterward. I can't wait to see the special features on the DVD though, Wright also gives us lots of goodies. You can be sure that I'm going to buy the special edition of this movie when it's released.

One last thing I forgot to mention! The ending. I had heard that there was one ending that they were going to originally do that sounded like total crap. Luckilythey changed it. But then, I heard that they were going to have Scott end up with ****** at the end of the movie. But then Bryan Lee O'Malley (finally) came up with an ending for the 6th book which caused them to have Scott end up with ******. They almost tricked me in the movie. At the end it honestly looked like they were going to have the one end up with Scott, but then they made him make the right decision.

Okay, that was like an essay so....in conclusion, GO SEE SCOTT PILGRIM!
